Modernist architect Peter Aldington dies at 93
Peter Aldington, British architect known for modernist houses combining material sensitivity with spatial innovation, has died aged 93. His modest but influential body of work spanned two decades, defined by uncompromising attention to detail and integrity.
Aldington's influence extended far beyond his limited output, a consequence of his absolute refusal to compromise on quality or artistic principle. His first solo commission, a village house at Askett in Buckinghamshire (1961), established aesthetic principles he maintained throughout his career: robust natural materials, refined proportions and sensitive integration with landscape. Working closely with his wife Margaret, Aldington developed an approach that imagined how inhabitants would experience and inhabit spaces. His principled stance ultimately led him to abandon architectural practice at 53, prioritizing integrity over commercial success.
