Experimental theatre explores Antarctic expedition
Director Jan-Christoph Gockel leads a theatrical production that traces an Antarctic expedition at extreme temperatures. The production, titled Polaris, combines boundary-pushing performance with extreme conditions.
The theatrical project investigates an Antarctic journey inspired by a stabbing incident, undertaken in temperatures reaching minus 80 degrees Celsius. The production represents an extreme physical and artistic challenge for the ensemble. The piece employs unconventional staging, including performers in polar bear costumes engaging in sledding sequences. Despite its serious subject matter and formidable conditions, the production takes a surprisingly comedic approach, raising questions about the balance between spectacle and substance in experimental theatre.
