Signed Maya Lintel Returned to Wrong Country
A 1,200-year-old limestone lintel signed by Mayuy, one of the rare ancient American artists to inscribe his name, was inadvertently repatriated to Mexico instead of Guatemala. The piece represents an exceptional example of documented Pre-Columbian artistic practice.
The limestone lintel, carved by Mayuy in the Classic Maya period, was repatriated through an administrative error that directed it to Mexico rather than its origin in Guatemala. Mayuy's signed sculptures are exceptionally rare in the archaeological record of the ancient Americas, making this piece a significant document of Pre-Columbian artistic identity. The signature represents one of few instances where an ancient American artist is individually credited for his work. The error highlights complexities in repatriation processes and the need for precise coordination between source nations. Efforts are underway to correct the placement and ensure the lintel reaches its intended destination.
