Mary Lovelace O'Neal, Painter and Activist, Dies
Mary Lovelace O'Neal, influential painter, professor and activist, has died at 84. Her work bridged abstraction and social engagement across decades of artistic practice.

She maintained a studio practice while teaching and organising within art institutions, refusing conventional separation between artistic production and social responsibility. Her paintings engaged with both modernist formal concerns and urgent questions of race, gender and justice. O'Neal's dual commitment to artistic rigour and activist engagement defined a generation of African American artists who rejected false hierarchies between these pursuits.
