Sheung Yiu examines facial recognition across cultures
Finland-based artist Sheung Yiu explores how facial reading has shifted from spiritual to economic use in a long-term research project. The work interrogates how this shift has eroded human agency.
Sheung Yiu's project "(Inter)faces of Predictions" at C/O Berlin investigates the historical and contemporary uses of facial analysis across different cultures and systems. As theorist Megan Williams notes in the exhibition, facial reading constitutes a form of determination that has progressively shifted from spiritual divination toward economic and surveillance applications. The artist's research-based practice examines how this instrumental use of faces reflects broader questions about agency, interpretation, and control in an increasingly datafied world.
